Lloyd Omdahl's column in the Sunday Tribune presented a bigoted view about nationalities in North Dakota and how the Bohemians and Irish are responsible for the binge drinking problem. According to the column, if you are of German or Norwegian decent you are conservative, but if you are Bohemian you are a drunken Bohemian. Omdahl goes on to say that the Irish could be blamed for the binge drinking, but there aren't enough of them to drive up the ranks; although it wouldn't take very many.

Omdahl's bigoted remarks about Bohemians and Irish aren't a mere slip of the tongue.

A bigoted newspaper article like Omdahl's should get some reaction by the Tribune. Not allowing Omdahl in the future to write in the Tribune isn't an option. That is because Omdahl is a good old politician whose writings help sell what the Tribune. I suspect all the Tribune will do is print an article saying the views of writers on the editorial pages aren't those of the newspaper.

I would like to settle Omdahl's claim that Bohemians are drunks by having an arm wrestling contest with him at the Tribune. I know he is older than me, but I am 68 years old and have had my stomach cut open four times for cancer. Also, a conservative Norwegian of any age should be able to beat a drunken Bohemian at arm wrestling.

If Omdahl wins, I'll pay $500 to the Sons of Norway, and if I win, he pays $500 to a Bohemian organization.
