The University of North Dakota using the name Fighting Sioux is a big issue to some people. Only a few Sioux people are among these most vocal objectors. Sioux students still graduate from UND, some with master's degrees.
Historically, when the Sioux came into North Dakota and South Dakota, they ran off many of the natives already living here, among them the Mandan/Hidatsa/Arikara and the Turtle Mountain Chippewa peoples. These tribes had already been decimated by European diseases, and were unable to withstand the power of the invading Sioux. Some of them still bear a grudge today.
Is it possible that non-Sioux Indian students at UND are responsible for some of the controversy? Think about it - institutions of higher learning would probably not name their sports teams after a weak, defeated people. The name Fighting Sioux is actually a huge compliment to the undaunted spirit of the Sioux nation.
