This letter is in response to the fearfulness I hear in some letters to the editor.
I feel more hopeful about the morality of our nation than Ihave for a long time. Economic difficulties also bring out the best in us.
Equality for all people has become more real. We have changed centuries of institutional cruelty and prejudice. It is no longer acceptable to enslave another human being based on skin color or gender. Women can vote. There is no justification for discrimination, including sexual identity. We keep moving toward treating all human beings with respect and dignity. This makes us more moral. Idon't believe anyone sees abortion as a general means of birth control, but there are situations when it is needed as an option.
I would see more consistency in the anti-abortion position if it also encompassed an anti-war position. If we have strong feelings about abortion, shouldn't we have strong feelings against war which takes so many young lives?
Despite several economic difficulties, we keep moving toward treating all segments of our society with respect and protection. I see people will to work together and help each other. There are so many stories of people helping others during the flood in North Dakota and during other problem times all over the country.
I love this country and it feels very good to see it moving in a positive direction. We become more moral each time we refuse to judge others and offer respect instead. I do believe our president and first lady are examples of this principle.
