I am one of many Americans who have paid for their insurance and am satisfied with what I have. I have had several surgeries and recognize that with a government-run program, Imight not have been eligible for a new hip or knee because of other health concerns. However, thanks to my insurance and recommendations by my physicians, I am able to continue to manage my businesses, contribute to my community and enjoy my quality of life.
Many of my friends and colleagues are already in Medicare with supplemental insurance and seem satisfied with their programs. I support the coverage of children and those who need Medicaid due to unfortunate circumstances in their lives. There is need for reform with the programs we already have, including the government Indian Health Service system, so sadly described in your recent Tribune story, before undertaking radical new programs. Frankly, Ihave never heard of anyone in our community being turned away by hospitals when they need one.
While it is easy for the horror stories regarding the health insurance industry to receive media attention, the health care reform debate should also consider success stories, like mine. Lawmakers need to evaluate the unintended consequences of extending a government run plan to all citizens in an already overextended health care system. Therefore, while I support health care reform, I don't think the government should run a public plan.
