I am a disabled person who uses a wheelchair. I do not believe the state puts enough money into programs for the disabled. Due to recent budget cuts in the Health and Human Services Department, many things that were once there for the disabled, to help them live a normal life, have been done away with.
I am an independent person, although I require 24-hour care. I participate in my community and in various forums and discussions about the needs of the disabled, from accessing public transportation to having needed supplies. It is clear to me that the disabled in this state are at the bottom of the list of priorities.
I am also aware of the $70 million windfall this state received from Washington, and believe a portion of these monies should be allocated to Health and Human Services to assure that the most vulnerable of our citizens are able to live the life they choose.
I believe people have to open their eyes and see what is happening in our state, and take action to assure that everyone, regardless of ability, has the resources they need to live a fulfilling life.
I encourage anyone with the same opinion to join me in a grassroots movement to urge our legislators to allocate more funds to us. Perhaps some action can finally be taken to assure that the quality of life our great state has to offer is enjoyed by everyone.
