"No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers' dirty looks … School's out for summer."
It was 1972 when rocker Alice Cooper sang those now-famous lyrics, the song becoming his first major hit. The euphoria of those words remains today for students, teachers and administrators, almost 40 years later, as school has once again ended, even if temporarily, for most of our kids (some have been on hiatus for a week or more).
The "high," however, isn't quite the same for parents. It's not that we don't love our chips off the old blocks, it's just that it is now our fault that our sons and/or daughters will soon face summer boredom.
What's a parent to do?
This editorial will not solve world peace, suggest a position on politics, foster dialog on a city governmental issue or debate tuition fees or academic excellence in higher education. It will, however, help you fight the good fight by providing the key to making the summer go by much faster and your life as a parent much easier.
Keep kids busy.
Admittedly, this is not easy. Kids will initially want to sleep in late and lie around the house. They believe they deserve it after all those study halls, pop quizzes, tests, sporting activities and age-appropriate early evening or late-night adventures.
That is fine, for a week. Then get them into a routine. Here are 10 suggestions:
1. Get a job. If you are old enough, there are a plethora of part-time and full-time jobs advertised in the newspaper.
2. Volunteer. Many nursing homes and other organizations could use the help.
3. Help around the house. Working moms and dads could use some help with dishes, washing clothes, sweeping floors, lawn mowing, washing cars or windows, watching over younger siblings, etc.
4. Read a book, five books, 10 books or 100 books over the course of the summer.
5. Get a hobby - painting, writing, hooking rugs, cooking, baking, collecting bugs (or whatever), etc.
6. Go for a daily bike ride or walk, increasing the distance slowly and as appropriate.
7. Get involved in a team sport and practice your skills in-between games.
8. Clean out your closet, toy bin, pack-rat drawers, areas or garage.
9. Get out of the house and play, or do activities, with friends.
10. Have fun, but limit time with electronics.
Have a great summer but don't waste the hours away. Enjoy life, keep busy, have fun and make a difference.
