I had the honor of leading off the recent band parade by marching with the U.S. flag. I observed many people attending the parade not giving the proper respect due our nation's symbol. That was greatly disappointing to me, after serving over 25 years in the military. I admit that the majority of observers did show the proper respect for the flag, but many did not.
When the flag passes by in parades, the proper etiquette is to remove headwear, stand at attention and place your right hand over your heart. If you are a retired military member, you may salute the flag in place of placing your hand over your heart.
