People can get their hands on a lifelike brain as part of a new exhibit at the Gateway to Science in the Frances Leach High Prairie Arts and Science Complex in Bismarck.

"Brain Matters" displays real, preserved brains for viewing and a simulated brain for people to touch. Other exhibits give people a chance to see how the brain works and is affected by alcohol and drugs.

"There are things for all ages," executive director Beth Demke said. "It is an extremely high-quality exhibit. The units are very engaging."

The traveling exhibit comes from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland. Gateway to Science rented the exhibit.

The exhibit opens Oct. 6 and will run into January, when it will travel to two other sites before coming back to Bismarck as a permanent exhibit.

This exhibit and a brain teasers exhibit that will open in January should appeal to an older audience, Demke said.

"It helps us reach high school and college students," she said. "Certainly, it is interesting to younger students as well."

There will be a floor-size puzzle for children. Other exhibits include MRI and CATscans comparing healthy and unhealthy brain tissues and activities that put the brain to the test.

Teachers will get to see the exhibit at an open house from 4 to 5:30 p.m. today.

The exhibit opens to the general public at noon Oct. 6. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children. Hours are noon to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.
