Only one class displaced by a recent fire at the University of Mary won't meet at a university facility. It also is the only class to have its meeting time changed.
Otherwise, classes that were in the Harold Miller Science Center were moved to other classrooms and common areas on campus, with some classes at the university's off-site Butler Center.
Classes were moved from the science center after a fire in an elevator caused smoke damage. It was subsequently closed for the semester for cleanup.
"We're trying to make it the least disruptive as possible," university spokesman Tom Ackerman said.
The fire Sept. 25 was started by a lighting fixture in an elevator. It damaged the elevator and caused smoke damage in the building and adjoining buildings. No one was injured in the fire, but four buildings were evacuated and six people were rescued by ladder from a third-floor classroom.
There were 100 classes displaced by the fire. The classes enrolled about 1,500 students, but the number of students it affected could be less because of students taking more than one class that was displaced.
The off-campus class is a chemistry lab, which will meet at St. Mary's Central High School on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting Thursday. The classes in the Butler Center, which is for adult education classes, are occupational therapy classes.
The student health clinic also was closed because of minor smoke damage. In the meantime, students can make appointments at the Mid Dakota Clinic at Kirkwood Mall or at Ninth Street and Rosser Avenue.
A damage estimate is not available because cleaning is not complete and the insurance company has not yet made a determination, Ackerman said.
Although the plan is to keep the science center closed for the semester, some classes could start using science center classrooms as the university gets the approval.
