Concert dedicated to Gov. Link set

Harold and Alma Van Heuvelen, violinist and pianist respectively, will give a concert at 4 p.m. July 20 at the Former Governors' Mansion at Fourth Street and Avenue B in Bismarck.

The concert is dedicated to former Gov. Art Link. The Van Heuvelens also want to help the Society for the Preservation of the Former Governors' Mansion raise funds to sponsor the yearly Art Link Fiddlers' Contest for Young People. A reception will follow the concert.

The couple have had careers performing, teaching, directing, supervising and conducting orchestras. She did graduate work in piano at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., where she served as a professional accompanist. She also spent 38 years as organist, choir director and director of music in a large church in Kalamazoo, Mich. She will play the Steinway grand piano at the mansion during the concert.

Harold "Van" Van Heuvelen served in the Bismarck public schools from 1946 to 1985, conducting and serving as director of music and fine arts. He studied at Hope College in Michigan and the University of Michigan, where he was awarded a master of music degree in violin performance. He is an alumnus of the Berkshire Music Festival sponsored by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. A violin made by Andreas Guarneri in 1674 will be featured in the concert.

The couple originally met in 1936 as 17-year-old freshmen at Hope College. Having each lost their spouses in 2003 and 2004, they were married on Nov. 18, 2006. They live in Kalamazoo.

The program will feature the duo performing pieces by Borowski, Bach, Kreisler and Mendelssohn and a collection of Art Link favorites on violin. Piano pieces include the Civil War tune "Ashokan Farewell" and works by Debussy, Dino, Massenet, Kreisler and Monti.
