The occupants of the Bismarck apartment that caught fire Saturday night are now taking shelter with a family friend, said their landlord, Millie Wald, on Sunday.
Those living in that apartment include a single mother with a 6-week-old infant, Wald said.
Wald said most of the tenants in the building at 317 S. 11th St., were out of town when the apartment caught fire. She said the other five apartments in the building did not sustain significant damage.
"Most of them were out deer hunting, I believe. There were only two tenants that were there when it happened," Wald said. "Everybody's safe, that's the main thing."
Doors to the apartment building were open on Sunday to air out the smoke smell.
Bismarck police said the fire caused about $33,000 in damage and was possibly started by grease on the stove.
"The rest of the building had smoke damage," said Sgt. Steve Scheuer of the Bismarck Police.
The Red Cross is also offering help to the tenants of the apartment building.
"If their apartment is uninhabitable we'd be able to put them up in a hotel for several nights," said Jutta Hopkins, director of the West Dakota Red Cross.
