Sen. Kent Conrad and Rep. Earl Pomeroy will not stage "town hall" meetings over their August recess from Congress, their offices said Friday.
Both Democratic lawmakers will hold a series of events during the monthlong break that range from virtual meetings with constituents to roundtable-like events with local leaders. Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., is planning on holding a series of town hall-style meetings in rural towns over the next month.
Melanie Rhinehart, a spokeswoman for Pomeroy, said the lawmaker will stage "tele-town halls," where members of the public can phone in questions to the lawmaker about pertinent issues. No schedule has been released yet.
"He hasn't done these traditional town hall meetings," Rhinehart said.
Conrad said on Friday that he is planning on holding 26 "listening sessions" that will focus on health care reform. No schedule has been released yet.
Whether the general public will be allowed to come to the events will depend "on who the local host is, how they are going to organize it," Conrad said.
Protesters have flooded some congressional town hall meetings around the country in light of a sweeping health care reform package making its way through Congress.
Violence broke out at two town hall events this week, one in Mehlville, Mo., where six protesters were arrested, and the other in Tampa, Fla., where two people suffered minor injuries.
