Police say six Bismarck businesses sold alcohol to minors during a compliance checkThursday night.

Sgt. Dwight Offerman said 10 plainclothes officers, four 18-year-olds and six 19-year-olds entered 76 Bismarck businesses with liquor licenses Thursday night. There are 90 liquor licenses in Bismarck, but two are open, two are not being used and 10 businesses were not open at the time of the compliance check.

Offerman said six businesses sold alcohol to minors, and of those six, three did not check identification.

Employees at Jorgy's Sports Bar, 601 Memorial Highway, Stadium Sports Bar, 1247 W. Divide Ave., and Loaf N' Jug, 2835 N. Washington St., did not check the identification of minors before selling to them, Offerman said.

He said employees at A & B Pizza:South, 311 S. Seventh St., Texas Roadhouse, 1505 Burnt Boat Drive, and Eagles Club, 313 N. 26th St., checked identification before selling to the minors.

Offerman did not know the circumstances leading the employees to check IDs and still sell.

A & B Pizza: South and Jorgy's Sports Bar also served to minors during the police department's last compliance check in April, Offerman said. He said the Eagles Club has failed in the past, too.

Offerman said the point of the compliance check is to eliminate one way minors get alcohol. It's harder to stop "bootlegging," where people older than 21 buy alcohol for minors, he said.

Offerman said 11.8 percent of businesses sold to minors during the April compliance check. Thursday night, 7.8 percent of businesses sold to minors.

"All in all, it's kind of good,"he said. "We're seeing some progress. We're seeing less sales."
