A Bismarck man has pleaded guilty to charges related to a crash in Bismarck early Sunday morning.

Jesse Valgren, 24, was charged in South Central District Court with fleeing in a motor vehicle, a Class Amisdemeanor.

He also was charged in Bismarck Municipal Court with driving under the influence, reckless driving and duty upon striking attended vehicle.

He received a traffic citation for open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

South Central District Judge Sonna Anderson sentenced Valgren on Monday to one year in jail with all but 20 days suspended for fleeing in a motor vehicle.

Bismarck Municipal Judge William Severin sentenced Valgren to seven days, all suspended, for DUI, and ordered him to pay $400 in fines. Severin also levied $330 fines for the other offenses.

Bismarck Police Lt. Randy Ziegler said police were called to a wreck at 12:53 a.m. Sunday, where the driver of the striking vehicle did not stop. Officers caught up to the vehicle, which stopped before taking off again.

Valgren told Anderson he was intoxicated and scared of having his probation revoked and being returned to prison. He did not remember stopping then taking off as officers approached, but said it likely happened.

"This could very well be," he said. "Obviously, the officer was more sober than I was."

Valgren also appeared on several petitions for revocation of probation. If he is not seen on those matters before being released from jail on the fleeing charge, he will be subject to a $1,500 cash bond.
