Nine Bismarck businesses sold alcohol to 18-year olds Tuesday night.

"That's too many,"said Bismarck Police Officer Perry Lauer. "I would prefer that it was 5 percent or less."

Four Bismarck teenagers, accompanied by police officers, attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages at 76 Bismarck businesses that hold liquor licenses. Seven of the 76 businesses were closed by the time the groups attempted the buys.

Employees at five businesses failed to check the minors' identification cards, Lauer, a school resource officer, said.

A & B Pizza South, 311 S. Seventh St., Cash Wise Liquors, 1144 E, Bismarck Expressway, Famous Dave's, 401 E. Bismarck Expressway, Jorgy's Sports Bar, 601 Memorial Highway, and Buffalo Wild Wings, 218 S. Third St. did not check identification before selling, Lauer said.

He said no attempt was made to disguise the ages of the minors.

"The whole purpose is to make sure they are carding people appropriately," Lauer said.

Employees at four businesses carded the minors and still sold to them.

Doublewood Inn, 1400 E. Interchange Ave., Applebee's Grill and Bar (North), 3200 North 14th St., Pizza Hut, 825 E. Broadway Ave., and Qdoba Mexican Grill, 312 S. Third St. checked identification, Lauer said.

Bismarck police attempt to test each of the 87 liquor license holders three times every year, Lauer said. He said police test the businesses because youth access to alcohol is a community issue.

"Overall, when we're down there, I would prefer that no one sold," Lauer said.

He said A & B, Famous Dave's, Applebee's, Buffalo Wild Wings, Cash Wise Liquors and the Doublewood have failed in the past. Doublewood failed at their last test, in November 2006.
