Well, there's Dasher.
And Dancer.
And Prancer and Vixen.
Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen.
But do you recall the most famous reindeer of all?
In Bismarck, it's Sarah Hatzenbuhler in a blinking red nose.
She would be your title character in Let's Dance Studio's upcoming holiday production, "Rudolph."
As in years past, Let's Dance owner Jenny Samuelson-Jangula has taken a holiday favorite and put her own spin on it. Literally. In addition to altering the story and changing some of the music, Samuelson-Jangula choreographed the piece.
While the studio's productions of "Christmas Carol" have been popular the last couple of years, it decided to shelve that one for a while and do something a little more…
"Lighthearted. And we wanted to try something new," Samuelson-Jangula said. "Artistically, Ineed something like this to keep going. And it's good for the dancers, too. 'Christmas Carol' sells out every year, but they wouldn't grow as dancers without trying something new."
So here is "Rudolph," Let's Dance-style. Hatzenbuhler, 18, heads a cast of about 350 dancers in the production, which will run today through Sunday at the Belle Mehus City Auditorium.
This version features reindeer - naturally - but also bunnies and elves and Santa Claus and, prominently, the weather. Dancers will portray the changing weather, as it transforms from clear to snowy and foggy. A video backdrop will add to the effect.
"We explored what we could do with that short little song, and decided to highlight on the storm and the weather," Samuelson-Jangula said. "The weather unfolds as the show does. A lot of this show is based on pure entertainment. Having all these kids on stage is the spirit of Christmas. It gets us in a festive mood for the holidays."
All that weather means a lot of costume changes. Many of the dancers have practiced changing clothes in a hurry more than they've rehearsed their routines. There also are about 50 people working behind the scenes to help with costume and set changes. Candy canes, snowflakes, giant wrapped boxes and Santa's sleigh took shape on the stage at rehearsal this week.
"It's an awesome show," Hatzenbuhler, a senior at St. Mary's Central High School, said. "It's really fun, and different from what we've done before."
The show premieres tonight at 7. It also will be performed at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. General admission tickets are $10, and are available at local Dan's Supermarket locations and the door. Reserved tickets are $15, and will be available at the door.
