The second annual Horizon Middle School Art Club holiday sale is this week.

It features a variety of artwork, from needlework to photography. It is made by students, their family members and teachers.

"There are fine arts and crafty things, too," said art teacher Lori Riehl.

The bookmarks, made out of a thin string of beads with beaded tassels on the end, were made by seventh-grader McKenzie Hanson.

"I got the idea out of an arts and craft beading book," she said.

She looked at a picture, then figured out on her own how to make it. It takes less than a half hour for her to make a bookmark.

McKenzie's problem solving is part of what art classes teach students, said art teacher Angela Worrel. Sometimes, students get in the classroom and discover the ability needed to make different types of art.

The art club is for students who like art. It has 30 students in it, and they meet and make art. Proceeds from the sale will support the art club, with the artists receiving a 10 percent commission. Last year the club made $600 on the sale.

Items can be purchased in Riehl's art room throughout the week. Sale hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today, Wednesday and Friday. Thursday, it will be available from 8 a.m. to 8:15 p.m.
