A Wilton woman and her newborn baby have tested positive for cannabis, the chemical in marijuana.

Bismarck Police Lt. Dan Donlin said Burleigh County Social Services reported that a 20-year-old woman and her son, born Jan. 8, were tested for marijuana at Medcenter One.

Social services said the test was done because of hospital policy and a standing physician order, Donlin said.

Medcenter spokesperson Kris Magstad said the hospital has an internal policy to test newborns exhibiting signs of marijuana in their system.

Donlin said the woman has not been arrested, and the case is still under investigation.

He said information has been forwarded to the state's attorney's office and to Bismarck detectives. However, since the woman is from Wilton, the Bismarck Police Department might not have jurisdiction over the case.

If authorities believe the woman smoked marijuana while in Wilton, the Burleigh County Sheriff's Department would be the investigating body.

Donlin did not know if the woman is in custody of the baby or if social services had removed the child.

A baby at Medcenter One tested positive for cannabis in April 2006. Vanessa Laducer, the mother of the baby, was charged with Class Bfelony child abuse and neglect. The charge was dismissed in August because Laducer had gone through treatment.
