A chance for high school students to do what they love in front of a crowd - and for a big prize - seems like just a dream.

However, on Sunday this dream will become a reality for three high school garage bands when they compete at the "Battle Of The Bands Let's Rock 08" competition. The battle will be held at Sleepy Hollow Park in Bismarck from 2 to 8 p.m.

Cost for attending the competition, hosted by Nicole Morrison-Mathern, Stephanie Sandstrom and their company, Entertainment Resources, is $10 at the door, but audience members will receive $2 off their ticket if they bring unused travel-size shampoos and toothpaste, chapstick or sunscreen.

Battle of the Bands will be supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation and ND Delta Epsilon Chi Organization, with profits from the ticket sales and the items that have been donated. Along with supporting a good cause, the competition will allow young bands to promote their music in a family-friendly environment.

"Bismarck doesn't have a lot of music outlets, so it's neat that they put this together for the kids," said vocalist and guitar player Arnold Jordan of the Broken Bricks.

Death and Taxes, Breathe The Stars, and Saving The Falling will all be competing for a prize that includes a photo shoot with Glasser Images, along with a band package from Stringbean Music.

This package will include a microphone and cable, a guitar/bass strap, a death metal distortion pedal and a drum stick holder. Besides these material gifts, they will also have bragging rights until next year, when Entertainment Resources plans to do a statewide competition. Second-place winners receive Battle Of The Bands T-shirts and third-place winners will receive something as well.

But these bands don't choose to compete just for the prizes. They do it for the love of music.

"We're excited to get out there and show people our talent and what we have to offer," said drummer Aaron Lundberg of Breathe The Stars.

Each band will play for a half hour; they will need to play a song from Guitar Hero I, II, or III that they can change to fit their style, along with an original song of their own. Guest performers like Electric City, Emily Doll, A Film Noir Love Story, and Vendetta Spoken will also be playing.

"I'm excited to see how much fun the bands are going to have," Nicole Morrison-Mathern said.

Although there are three judges, Ben Suchy, Young Blood Rizz Shizzle, and Lauren Meiers, whose votes each count for 25 points, the audience will be the ones to please. From 7 to 7:30, guest performer, The Broken Bricks, will be playing while the crowd text messages their vote. The winner will be announced at 8 p.m. and will receive their prizes along with an opportunity to give an acceptance speech.

"We aren't too concerned about the prizes," said drummer Jack Greenwood of Death and Taxes. "We are just excited to play and have the crowd enjoy our music."

But the bands won't be the only people receiving prizes. The sponsors of this competition have donated items to give away between performances. Sponsors include Hollywood Video, Eckroth Music, Silver Nights DJ, Rock30 Games, the National Guard of North Dakota and BNC National Bank, as well as Vintage Guitar, Stringbean Music, Walsh Interactive, Glasser Images, Bismarck YMCA and Dan's Supermarket. The audience will also have the opportunity to purchase some of the bands' merchandise after the show.
