Police found a suspect in three hit-and-run wrecks that occurred within about 10 minutes Tuesday evening hanging upside down in an evergreen tree in north Bismarck.
Officers cited the 16-year-old Bismarck boy with driving under the influence, Bismarck Police Lt. Dan Donlin said.
Donlin said police received the first call about a hit and run involving a red Ford Ranger at 7:10 p.m. The pickup had sideswiped another vehicle while heading north on State Street past Divide Avenue, Donlin said.
Witnesses then saw the pickup turn east onto Spalding Avenue, where the pickup struck a light pole at the intersection of Spalding and North 14th Street, Donlin said.
At 7:21 p.m., police received a call that a red Ford Ranger had hit a parked car on the 2000 block of North 16th Street, Donlin said.
He said the owner of the parked car said the driver of the pickup repeatedly rammed the car, apparently trying to move it out of the way.
The owner of the parked car went outside and asked the driver of the pickup what he was doing, Donlin said. He said the pickup driver got out of the vehicle and walked away, heading north.
The car owner watched the boy walk into an evergreen tree, and he never saw the boy come out, Donlin said.
He said officers found the 16-year-old boy hanging upside down inside the tree, wedged between the tree and a retaining wall.
The boy was transported by ambulance to a Bismarck hospital to be treated for frostbite, Donlin said.
Damages to the sideswiped car on State Street totaled about $150, damage to the light pole about $1,200 and damage to the parked car on North 16th Street about $1,000, Donlin said. The boy's vehicle had about $2,700 damage, he said.
The boy, who turned 17 on Wednesday, has been cited with driving under the influence, Donlin said. He said the boy also could face additional citations of minor in consumption and possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as traffic citations related to the three wrecks.
