An assistant U.S. attorney is the new president of AARP North Dakota.

David Peterson is retiring from his federal prosecutor's job this month after a 40-year legal career. He's a native of Carpio.

In a statement issued by the AARP, Peterson said he's pleased to be chosen for the volunteer AARP president job. He said many of AARP's issues, such as health care and prescription drug coverage, are important not just for seniors but for the country as a whole.

Janis Cheney is the state AARP director. She says the AARP is a volunteer-driven organization and the state president is a key leadership job.
