There's no business like snow business this time of year.

At Huff Hills south of Mandan, the ski area is expecting a record-setting Christmas season.

"We're pleasantly surprised at the crowds," mountain operation manager Andy Beck said. During the Christmas break, the ski area could see 600 to 700 skiers and snowboarders, he said.

So far, about 60 percent of the trails are open. All the white stuff falling this month has made for ideal skiing conditions. The open trails have powder and packed powder with a 15- to 30-inch base.

"It's awesome," Beck said.

Huff Hills makes snow for 90 percent of the ski area. The snow that's fallen in December could open areas that have been unreachable by the man-made snow, he said.

"We make snow, no matter what," Beck said.

Huff Hills will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Jan. 4.
