A convicted sex offender has been charged with new sex crimes in Mandan and failing to register as a sex offender in Burleigh and Morton counties.
Michael Gordon, 23, was charged Friday in Morton County with sexual assault, a Class C felony, corruption or solicitation of minors, a Class C felony, and failure to register as a sex offender, a Class Amisdemeanor.
South Central District Judge Donald Jorgensen set bond for Gordon at $20,000 cash.
Gordon was charged Friday in Burleigh County with failure to register as a sex offender, a Class A misdemeanor, and two counts of Class Amisdemeanor false statement in a government affair. Gordon has not made a first appearance on the Burleigh County charges.
Mandan Police Lt. Paul Leingang said Bismarck police contacted the Mandan Police Department last week to inform them that a convicted sex offender may be living in Mandan without being registered there.
Leingang said Gordon was located and arrested at the home of a Mandan family he had been living with. Gordon has been accused of having sexual contact with a 16-year-old girl in the family, Leingang said.
According to court documents in Burleigh County, Gordon was charged with failing to register a new address as required when he left Burleigh County.
He also was charged with two counts of false statement in a government affair for allegedly giving false addresses twice on the North Dakota Offender Registration Program change of address form, documents said.
According to court documents, Gordon has a 2003 conviction out of Cass County for luring minors by computer. He originally was sentenced to two years with all but 90 days suspended and two years of supervised probation, but he later was sentenced to one year and one day after his probation was revoked.
Gordon also has a 2004 conviction out of Cass County for corruption or solicitation of minors. He was sentenced to seven months in jail, which ran concurrently to his probation revocation sentence for luring minors by computer.
According to the North Dakota Attorney General's Sex Offender Web site, Gordon is considered a high-risk offender and must register his address for the rest of his life.
