A 37-year-old Minnesota hunter was shot and wounded in Logan County Saturday, the second day of North Dakota's deer gun season, authorities said.

Ronald Glenn Mehl of Eden Prairie, Minn., was in a hunting party of four hunting deer in Nathan Township in Logan County, according to Logan County Sheriff Steve A. Engelhardt. The accident occurred around 1 p.m. 15 miles southwest of Gackle.

The incident remains under investigation, but it appears that another hunter in the party mistook Mehl for a deer. Mehl was walking in an unharvested corn field. Mehl was hit in the abdomen, and the Napoleon Ambulance, Lehr First Responders and the Wishek Ambulance were called to the scene.

Mehl was transported to the Wishek Community Hospital by the Napoleon Ambulance. He later was airlifted by to Fargo, where he remains in the intensive care unit at Merit Care in Fargo.

Elsewhere in the state, authorities continue to investigate the apparent accidental shootings of two other deer hunters on the opening weekend. One hunter was shot northwest of Minot, and the second man was wounded south of Fargo.

Neither of those men appeared to be seriously injured, authorities said.
