VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) - A pickup crashed into the rear of a car on Interstate 94, killing two women and injuring a 3-year-old girl in the car, the Highway Patrol says.
The victims were identified Monday as Nancy Kamstra, 58, of Valley City, the driver of the car, and her passenger, Joyce Grass, 40, of Fargo. Three-year-old Carrie Ann Grass of Fargo was taken by helicopter ambulance to Fargo's MeritCare Hospital, Highway Patrol Lt. Eric Pederson said.
The crash happened about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, in the westbound lanes of the interstate, about five miles east of Valley City, the patrol said. The women were dead on arrival at Mercy Hospital in Valley City, Pederson said.
The pickup occupants were not injured, Pederson said. They were identified as Christopher Barkman, 28; Katharin Barkman, 23, and 4-month-old Erin Barkman, all of Neilburg, Saskatchewan.
Pederson said the car that was struck was traveling slower than normal because it was using a spare tire. He said no citations were issued but authorities were still investigating the crash.
