The Century High School science labs will receive a $330,000 renovation.
The Bismarck Tribune incorrectly reported on Page 1B Tuesday that the Bismarck School Board selected the cheaper option for renovating science classrooms.
In fact, the board decided Monday night to fund the option favored by science teachers at Century.
The science labs were chosen for a $30,000 renovation earlier this year to replace some temporary walls with permanent walls and to replace worn gas lines.
Earlier this month, Darin Scherr, director of facilities and transportation, asked for additional funds to do a more comprehensive renovation.
At the meeting Monday, the school board was given a choice between a $130,000 renovation to enlarge the classroom space and update the lab tables or a $330,000 renovation to enlarge the classroom and lab spaces, increase the classroom stage and expand a storage area at the end of the science wing hallway.
The money for the project won't be spent until next fiscal year.
It will be paid out of the general fund because other projects have been designated to be paid out of the building fund in the future.
The primary cost of the project is from chemical resistant surfaces for the lab area and rerouting the gas and water pipes.
Extra lab and classroom space comes from removing storage and prep room space.
The hallway storage room would be redesigned to give more limited access to chemicals - it currently can be accessed from two doors - and keep the refrigerator, freezer and sterilization equipment in one place.
Construction on the classrooms will be started and completed this summer. Summer school classes will not be held in the rooms because the floors will be torn up in the lab areas, Scherr said.
The district will reassign summer school students, but a plan hasn't been made, Superintendent Paul Johnson said. A likely location is Horizon Middle School, because of location, he said.
