A musical about two high school students singing their way to the top of musical auditions, and another that takes place during the French Revolution, seem like an unlikely pair. But as Susan Lundberg, executive director of Sleepy Hollow Summer Theatre, said, "It will be a season for everyone."
Sleepy Hollow is celebrating its 19th season and kicked off its summer theater program with art classes that started last week at Century High School. There are three different sessions of art classes during the summer and students can register by picking up a brochure at Bismarck Parks and Recreation, Gallery 522 or online at www.shst.org.
Then jumping into the summer, on the longest day of the year, June 21, Sleepy Hollow will hold its second annual Midsummer Celebration of Light. The free event takes place from 7 to 11 p.m. at Sleepy Hollow Arts Park in Bismarck.
The Celebration of Light will be the first event to use the two new stages that were built by Boy Scout Andrew Turck and Girl Scout Amy Schaaf. It offers continuous entertainment, such as the Prairie Rose String Quartet, Blue Seven Jazz Septet and show excerpts from "High School Musical" and "Les Miserables." Lundberg said this year's goal also is to have a laser show.
"It's terrific to do things in the community that are vibrant and enriching for everyone," Lundberg said. "We're celebrating being outdoors, and this will lead us into the two big summer productions."
This year, Sleepy Hollow will take on two summer shows, "Les Miserables" and "High School Musical," which Lundberg said will both consist of a full 60-member cast.
"High School Musical" is an Emmy Award-winning American television film about two high school juniors, Troy Bolton, captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez, a beautiful and shy transfer student who excels in math and science, who try out for their high school's musical. Through the process of falling for each other, their rival cliques get in the way because of their differences. But for the sake of music, everyone puts aside their differences, because they are all in it together. Troy is played by Matthew Kurtz and Monte Arso and Gabriella is played by Krista Boehm and Becca Lebak.
Lebak, starring in her ninth and 10th shows with Sleepy Hollow this summer, said the audience can expect a lot from this production. "The show is full of energy and will be a lot of fun."
Sam Ivory and Carly Schaub are co-directing the production, and Job Christenson, who also is performing in the Medora Musical this summer, is the artistic-musical director.
"It's nice for young people to see a show performed by talented people their own age," said Lundberg.
"High School Musical" will run from July 9 to 19.
While "High School Musical" may attract a young crowd, "Les Miserables" is a classical musical that Justin Heim, who plays Thenardier, said "will attract more of the artsy crowd."
"Les Miserables" is the story of Jean Valjean, a Frenchman imprisoned for stealing bread, who must flee a police officer, and soon finds himself in the midst of the French Revolution.
Heim, who is in his fifth year with Sleepy Hollow, described the musical as "epic."
"There's so many different plot points, and throughout the play different stories develop. But in the end it all comes together," he said.
"Les Miserables" is directed by Robert McFarland and the co-musical directors are Christenson and Schaub.
It will be performed from July 24 to Aug. 2.
"The whole thing isn't about theater; it's about life," said Lundberg. "Because life is a theater."
