Wild Things Gallery Gifts & Frame Shop will open its new 424 S. Third St. location on March 1, owner Deb Sandness announced Friday.

With a major buildout running ahead of schedule, Sandness said workers are installing fixtures and displays to accommodate an increased inventory and a larger matting and framing center.

Wild Things will remain open at its current location in Kirkwood Mall until Feb. 20, with special pricing and discounts on giftware, framed artwork and custom framing services, she said.

"We're excited about the new location," Sandness said. "The traffic on South Third is great, and we are very pleased to have Applebee's, Cookies for You and the Escape on Third Salon as new neighbors. They all do good business."

Sandness said the gallery will have more flexibility with hours for special events at the new location, including more involvement from artists with signings and exhibit openings, and will benefit from the convenient "front-door" parking for customers.

Local artists like Sam Coleman and Nevada Miller will continue to exhibit their work in the gallery, along with many regional artists. A special seating area - with a fireplace for additional ambience - will allow customers to relax while they consider the variety of styles available.

"It's a great atmosphere for the gallery," she said.

The extra space also will allow the store to showcase more home decor and accessories, as well as larger pieces like furniture, she said. "Overall, we're bringing increased variety and volume to a cozier atmosphere. It's a nice location."

Sandness purchased Wild Things from Scott Yale in May 2005, and has worked at the gallery since 1994, when original owner Mark Hamilton opened the business at Kirkwood Mall. She said she has a great appreciation for fine arts and considers it her comfort zone.

The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with extended hours for special events and the holiday season.
