Bismarck's Grand 11 Theatres, 1486 Interstate Loop, will begin work this spring on adding four screens. Opening of the addition is scheduled for fall.

Over the years, theater owner Jerry Brekke has purchased the former UBC center, Tour Ice building and Interstate Laundry, 1438 Interstate Loop. These buildings will be torn down to make way for the addition and increased parking.

Brekke said he has been planning the expansion over the past two years. He attributes the recent economic and residential growth in the area for the increased demand for more movie screens.

"We want to be part of the growth of north Bismarck and will continue to offer our patrons the best possible movie-going experience available," Brekke said. "New movies open on two or three screens and sometimes we have children's movies showing on six to eight screens; this really limits what people can come and see."

The new section will resemble the latest additions, which opened in 2001, featuring large screens, stadium seating and digital sound. The Grand is in contact with a California studio to keep the new addition's theme similar to the current decor, but with a more elaborate Egyptian feel. A third concession area also will be provided.

The Carmike Cinemas in Gateway Mall has eight screens.
