Officers in Bismarck and Burleigh County worked overtime over the weekend to enforce underage drinking and traffic laws.

Bismarck Police Lt. Dan Donlin said four Bismarck Police Department officers worked overtime Saturday night to enforce underage drinking laws.

The officers arrested 10 adults on a total of 15 charges and issued a speeding citation and a seat-belt violation citation, Donlin said.

Adults under 21 were arrested on charges of minor in possession, delivery of alcohol, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under suspension, minor in a liquor establishment, reproducing operator's or driver's license and open container, Donlin said.

The extra officers were paid with federal grant money from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Donlin said.

He said the grant money was specifically for enforcement of underage drinking laws.

Donlin said Saturday night's enforcement completed the department's underage drinking grant for this year.

The department is in the process of applying for another grant, he said.

Burleigh County Sheriff's Major Nick Sevart said eight sheriff's department officers worked overtime Friday, Saturday and Sunday to enforce traffic laws.

Sevart said two officers worked overtime Friday, three worked overtime Saturday and three worked overtime Sunday. The officers were in addition to the usual patrol shift of about five officers, Sevart said.

The extra officers issued 52 speeding citations and 21 seat-belt citations, Sevart said. He said the department, including officers working normal shifts, issued a total of 98 traffic citations, made 13 arrests for criminal traffic violations and issued 82 warnings.

The money to pay the overtime for officers came from a grant from the North Dakota Department of Transportation, Sevart said.

"Our goal on this whole thing is to ensure the safety of the motoring public," he said.
