The 6-month-old daughter of a woman charged with abuse or neglect of a child has died.
The child, identified in court documents as "K.D.," died early Wednesday morning, Burleigh County State's Attorney Richard Riha confirmed.
Stevie Buckley, 18, was arrested and charged Tuesday for abuse or neglect of a child, a Class C felony. She also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor, and possession of marijuana and minor in possession or consumption, both Class B misdemeanors.
South Central District Judge Sonna Anderson set bond for Buckley at $3,000 cash or surety on Tuesday. The bond had not been posted by Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Burleigh County Sheriff's Department, deputies were called to the St. Alexius emergency room at 11:45 p.m. Monday for a possible child abuse or neglect report. Buckley had brought her 6-month-old daughter to the hospital; the child was dehydrated and her ribs were showing.
According to a search warrant, deputies seized bottles of whiskey and vodka from Buckley's home, as well as smoking devices, rolling papers, aerosol duster and burnt marijuana cigarettes.
Riha said the baby's death remains under investigation. The case will be reviewed to determine if Buckley will face additional or different charges, he said.
Buckley, a college student, indicated she would apply for court-appointed counsel, but no attorney was listed in her court file by Wednesday afternoon. Buckley told Anderson she has lived in Bismarck about one month and previously lived in Grand Forks.
