Weather for the weekend will be breezy and possibly wet.
"We always seem to have cool, wet weather over Memorial Day weekend," said Bill Abeling, forecaster for the National Weather Service.
Today likely will be less windy than Thursday, with speeds at 20 mph to 25 mph, but a high chance of precipitation in the Bismarck-Mandan area is likely to bring some relief to the dry area.
For the last few days, a low-pressure system has been sitting just to the south, with a dry, north wind keeping the system from coming into North Dakota.
"It keeps looking like it's moving - like it's going to move up from South Dakota," Abeling said.
Once it does break north, Abeling said it will bring precipitation and a brief period of warmer temperatures.
"We'll be on the fringe of precipitation into Friday or Saturday," he said.
Friday's high is expected in the mid-60s, with Saturday climbing into the low 70s.
Patrick Ayd, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said not to expect a break from the winds just yet. He said breezes should continue through Sunday and into Monday.
Abeling said the recent winds are partially normal with spring, but also because of the dryness.
The dryness allows the atmosphere to heat up more during the day and less at night, because the moisture isn't there to hold things steady, he said.
Ayd said travelers should be aware of hazardous fire conditions, despite the expected moisture in southwest North Dakota.
"When you have the winds and the dry conditions, sparks can get away from you," he said.
The farther north, the drier it likely will be, Ayd said.
In the southwest of the state, Abeling expects anywhere from one-fourth to an inch of rain.
There's even the possibility of severe weather Saturday into Sunday, Abeling said.
Sunday is expected to still have showers, but have the warmest temperatures, in the mid-70s, before a front from the north brings cooler weather. Highs are only expected to reach the 50s or 60s on Monday.
"We're looking at a fairly cool Memorial Day," said Abeling.
He also said there's the possibility of frost Monday night into Tuesday morning.
"We're not done with (frost) yet," he said. "But it will probably be the last possibility of it this summer."
