Local colleges report an increase in students on the first day of classes.

Bismarck State College had 3,772 students enrolled for the first day, compared to 3,515 enrolled the first day last year.

University of Mary had about 2,800 students enrolled the first day. University spokesman Tom Ackerman said the number could be more because of a large freshman class. Last year, the university had 2,769 students the first day.

United Tribes Technical College did not have enrollment figures available. Last year, it had 554 students a week after classes began. The college made changes in its enrollment management. Official enrollment numbers will be made available in September.

Enrollment continues after the first day for late-starting classes, some adult education classes and online classes at some of the institutions.

"There's constant movement," BSC spokeswoman Jordis Conrad said.

This can change the enrollment numbers as the semester progresses. For schools in the North Dakota University System, official enrollment figures will be tallied four weeks into the semester. University of Mary will take an official count in September.
