Early registration discount continues to Oct. 16 for "The Travels of Maximilian and Bodmer" symposium planned for Oct. 23-27 on the campus of Bismarck State College.

The event is sponsored by The Dakota Institute of the Lewis & Clark Fort Mandan Foundation and directed by Clay Jenkinson.

Presenters from across the United States, Germany and Switzerland are coming to Bismarck for the event, which celebrates the 175th anniversary of the expedition led by German Prince Maximilian, accompanied by his Swiss artist, Karl Bodmer.

Presentations begin Oct. 23 with a keynote address by Elliott West, professor of history at the University of Arkansas, and continue through Oct. 25. Field trips to Fort Clark, Fort Mandan, the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and Knife River Indian Villages take place Oct. 26. On Oct. 27, symposium participants can attend the annual meeting dinner of the Lewis & Clark Fort Mandan Foundation, with Jenkinson as keynote speaker.

Special exhibits featuring all 81 of Karl Bodmer's "aquatints," Prince Maximilian artifacts and letters of correspondence between Thomas Jefferson and Germany's Alexander von Humboldt from the Library of Congress also will be shown at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center.
