WASHINGTON - Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., has nominated six North Dakota students for appointments to the nation's service academies.
Conrad awarded nominations to Daniel Canham, of Bismarck, Tyler Oar, of Mayville, and Justin Schulz, of Davenport, for the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Canham, 17, is a senior ranked first in his class at Century High School. Oar, 17, is a senior at Central Valley High School in Buxton. Schulz, 18, is a senior at West Fargo High School.
Conrad nominated Philip Axt, of Lincoln, and Emmett Tischmak, of Mandan, for the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. Axt, 17, is a senior at Bismarck High School. Tischmak, 17, is home schooled and active at Mandan High School.
Michelle Bosch, of Bismarck, was nominated for the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Col. Bosch, 17, is a senior at Century High School in Bismarck.
The armed service academies require potential students to be nominated by either a member of Congress or the vice president as the first step in a long application process. Final appointments are determined by the academies, selecting from the nationwide list of nominees. Once accepted, the students are given scholarships to the educational institutions and a full military appointment.
Also, Whitney Evanson, an 18-year-old Fargo South graduate, has been accepted to the U.S. Air Force Academy, and recently began her studies after successfully completing basic cadet training.
