Barefoot and smiling, Theresa Ebertz, 16, walked through a stream of water that flowed quickly through the gutters of Hamburg Drive.
The water flowed from the fire truck that was parked in front of her house and from the neighborhood fire hydrant, which firefighters had used to extinguish the fire that engulfed the Ebertz family's garage Sunday afternoon.
The Bismarck Fire Department responded to the fire at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Sunday at 1751 Hamburg Drive, in Bismarck, the home of Chris and Yvonne Ebertz.
All four Bismarck Fire Department stations responded, with 15 firefighters on the scene.
The extensive garage fire was under control within half an hour. Two of the Ebertz's six family members were in the home when the fire started. No one was injured.
Neighbor Gary Ennen and his son Jesse Ennen, of Fargo, called 911 to report the fire at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
"There was smoke rolling out of the garage, and I could hear some explosions," Gary Ennen said.
"There was popping going on left and right," Jesse Ennen said. "I don't know how the fire started. It was really quick."
"I just heard clacking in the garage. I thought my mom was just opening (and closing) the car door or something," Theresa Ebertz said.
After she realized there was a fire in the garage, she got her younger sister and her dog, and ran out of the house, she said.
Homeowner Yvonne Ebertz was just coming home from a bike ride when she saw her two daughters running from the house.
She noticed smoke billowing out of her garage door, which was open. Flames and explosions soon followed, she said.
One vehicle was in the garage at the time of the fire. It had been driven about an hour before.
Also, the garage was well-stocked with bulk containers of laundry detergent, which may have fueled the fire, she said.
"At this point, we do not know how (the fire) originated," Bismarck Fire Chief Joel Boespflug said. "We need to take care of this for the homeowners."
"I've never been involved in a fire before. I am trying to think of things that would be worse," Yvonne Ebertz said.
