The first-ever "Home Run Heroes" baseball game Feb. 10 for children with disabilities is being sponsored by the Student Physical Therapy Association at the University of Mary.
The game, organized and hosted by U-Mary graduate students in physical therapy, will run from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Leach Field House on campus.
"The event is a way for children with disabilities to fully participate in a sporting event and interact with positive role models as well as to teach able-bodied individuals how to interact with them," said Mary Dockter, U-Mary assistant professor and director of clinical education.
"The event provides an opportunity for families of children with disabilities the chance to interact and support one another."
Home Run Heroes idea is based on the Minot Dream Catchers League, an event for children in grades K-12 with moderate to severe physical disabilities. The game is specifically designed for children who would be unable to participate in summer recreational baseball leagues due to safety concerns or physical needs such as braces, walkers and wheelchairs.
Following the game, participants and families will have pizza and pop and then be special guests that evening at the University of Mary Marauders basketball games at home against Concordia St. Paul.
The registration deadline for the event is Monday.
