GOP presidential straw poll planned

North Dakota Republicans plan a presidential straw poll at the party's "roundup" next month, its state director said.

The straw poll will show the preference of GOP activists who attend the Oct. 26 event at a Bismarck motel. It will not affect the assignment of the state delegates to the Republican National Convention, said Mike Schatz, the North Dakota Republican Party director.

All Republican presidential candidates have been invited to the roundup, but none has yet indicated they will attend, Schatz said.

Both Republicans and Democrats are holding a statewide presidential preference caucus Feb. 5. Schatz said the straw poll results would not affect the caucus.

North Dakota Republicans normally have a state meeting, dubbed the "roundup," during years when elections are not held. It includes campaign workshops and other events of interest to political activists.
