Another soldier serving with the North Dakota National Guard has been killed.
The soldier, whose identity and unit will not be released until this morning, apparently died in a non-combat accident. More information will be forthcoming only after the Guard can notify the soldier's family and the family members of other soldiers in the unit.
"I can confirm there was an incident in which a soldier has been killed," Guard spokesman Rob Keller said Thursday.
The latest death makes 12 fatalities for the North Dakota National Guard since 2003, and the second in a week. Cpl. Nathan Goodiron, 25, of Mandaree, was killed in an enemy attack on Thanksgiving Day in Afghanistan.
Goodiron's remains were flown into Minot on Thursday afternoon. Funeral services were scheduled Saturday in the Mandaree High School.
Goodiron was serving with the Guard's 188th Air Defense Artillery, which is one of two North Dakota units currently on active duty overseas. The other, the 129th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, recently completed a mission in Iraq and is stationed in Qatar.
Besides Goodiron, two other members of the 188th have been killed in Afghanistan. Sgt. Travis Van Zoest and Cpl. Curtis Mehrer, both from Bismarck, were killed in action in June when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle.
The Guard's 141st Engineer Combat Battalion also suffered four fatalities during its tour in Iraq in 2004. Bismarck's 957th Multi-Role Bridge Company lost three of its members in Iraq in 2003-04, and one soldier from Company A of the 164th Engineer Combat Battalion died in Iraq.
Additionally, six North Dakotans serving with the regular Army have been killed in Iraq or Afghanistan since 2003.
