BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Search committees are to meet next week to narrow a list of 16 applicants for North Dakota University System chancellor and nearly 30 applicants for each of two president positions.

The chancellor search committee meets Jan. 12. Committees seeking presidents of Mayville State University and the North Dakota State College of Science are to meet a day earlier. Sunday was the application deadline for the jobs.

The chancellor applicants include Bill Goetz, Gov. John Hoeven's chief of staff and a former Dickinson State administrator; James Long, chief of support services for North Dakota Workforce Safety and Insurance, and Jonathan Sickler, a former student member of the state Board of Higher Education.

A fourth applicant with North Dakota ties, Robert Hauer, director of education and training, Grand Forks Air Force Base, withdrew his name.

Twenty-nine people have applied for the Mayville State job, including interim president Gary Hagen and Fargo attorney Craig Richie, a member of the university's Foundation Board who served three terms in the state House.

Twenty-five people applied to be president of the State College of Science, including interim president John Richman and Harvey Link, a Science vice president.

Seven people applied for both president openings. Among them is David Mathieu, who also was a finalist for the Bismarck State president's job. Mathieu is a special assistant to the vice chancellor for academic affairs for the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.

Another former Bismarck State finalist, Jerry Migler, a provost for the Moorhead campus of Minnesota State Community and Technical College, also applied for the Science job. He is a former Science administrator.

James Bryant, an attorney in Washington, D.C., applied for both the job of chancellor and president of Science.
