Besides having a fatal stabbing to investigate, the Bismarck Police Department had a number of incidents to keep them busy this weekend, including a man being killed by a train.
David Lee Smith, also known as David Lee Seewalker, 42, of Mandan, was killed after being hit by a train after 11 p.m. Friday night.
According to a police report, Smith left a downtown bar and headed southbound on foot and was struck by the train.
"The train conductor says he sounded the horn, saw the subject look up at the train and then the male subject started to run southbound in an attempt to beat the train across the tracks," Bismarck Police Sgt. Jeff Solemsaas said. "And at this point, the train did strike him."
Smith was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Brian Hare, an employee of the Peacock Alley, said he saw the body about 50 feet south of the tracks near Fifth Street downtown, although he didn't see the accident.
"I don't know if he didn't see it or what," Hare said. "It just doesn't make sense."
Hare was on his way to meet friends when he saw the body.
The police were notified of the accident at about 11:30 Friday night.
Four hours before the train accident, the Bismarck Police Department received a call that a man barricaded himself in his E. Calgary Ave. residence with a shotgun.
According to a police report, the man had went to his girlfriend's residence earlier that day, broke windows there and rammed her garage door with his car. The man then returned to his residence where police tried to negotiate with him before they broke in and took him into custody.
Police also responded to a strong-arm burglary at the Tesoro service station on 1905 N. Washington St. at about 5:30 Saturday morning.
According to a police report, two men stole cartons of cigarettes by intimidating the clerk.
They later fled and the clerk called police.
When the police were on scene, the clerk saw one of the men drive by and police apprehended him and arrested him for robbery. Police were still looking for the other suspect on Saturday.
