Paddlefish season arrests average

Associated Press

Law enforcement officials say they snagged an average number of lawbreakers during North Dakota's paddlefish season this year.

Daryl Kleyer, a warden supervisor with the state Game and Fish Department, said his agency recorded 34 arrests and citations during the season. The season opened May 1 and closed May 13, more than two weeks ahead of schedule, to protect the fish population.

About a third of the crimes involved fishing violations, Kleyer said. Others ranged from minors consuming alcohol to possession of marijuana, he said.

Highway Patrol Capt. Alan Billehus said troopers arrested 13 people for drunken driving in the area during paddlefish season.

The paddlefish spawn in northwestern North Dakota and eastern Montana, near the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers.

Williams County Sheriff's Capt. Bob Stancel said the paddlefish season has led to a crowded county jail in some previous years, due mainly to drunken driving arrests.

But Stancel said deputies did not arrest any fishermen this year. He said the county received grants in past years to step up drunken driving enforcement during the season, but it got no grants this year.

Authorities in McKenzie County said no arrests were attributed to people taking part in the paddlefish season this year.
