VELVA, N.D. (AP) - The small church here could not hold all the mourners for the funeral of Anita Knutson, so a secondary area was set up in the high school gymnasium for them to watch the service on a TV monitor.
Knutson, 18, was found dead in her Minot apartment June 4. She had just completed her first year at Minot State University, after graduating from Velva High School. Police say they are still looking for suspects in her death.
Funeral services were held Monday in Velva.
"There's no seismographic record of this happening," Mary Ann Haugen said, about the day last week when Knutson's body was found in her apartment by her father, Gordon.
"No trees fell, no buildings collapsed," Haugen told mourners at Monday's service. "But at that time, for Gordon and his friends, the earth shook. Those who had known and loved Anita Knutson knew that their world had changed forever."
Haugen told of how Knutson became a "steel magnolia" when she confronted the Velva High School principal over the school's dress code, and how she had befriended students who were not the most popular.
"She had that megawatt smile, and she brightened others' lives with it," Haugen said.
Family members spoke of a more direct impact of Knutson's death.
"I guess that stupid old saying is right after all," said her sister, Anna. "You know, the one that says, 'You don't know what you've got until it's gone.' I guess I never really did know how much I loved my sister."
Anna Knutson shared stories of their childhood.
"I suppose what I'm trying to say is, never let go of anything that once made you smile," she said. "Forever, her memory will be etched into my mind, to remind me that she will always have a special place in my heart."
Knutson was to be buried in Butte, where her parents now live.
