State gets byway improvement funds

WASHINGTON-The Department of Transportation has released $331,784 for three scenic byway improvement projects in North Dakota.

The projects:

n $222,740 will be used to help preserve Coghlan Castle, which is located along the Turtle Mountain Scenic Byway north of Rolla on State Highway 30. Specifically, the funds will go toward restoring the historic site and building an interpretive area.

n $59,044 will be used to improve the Tetrault Woods State Forest Scenic Overlook. Specifically, the funds will go toward building a parking lot and picnic shelter, making the area friendlier to travelers. It faces the Pembina Gorge and is located just off of Cavalier County Road 55.

n $50,000 will be used to help sustain the Standing Rock Native American Byway on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. The stretch goes south on State Highways 1806 and 24 on the reservation and overlooks Lake Oahe.

The grants were awarded by the Department of Transportation with funds appropriated by Congress. The state's congressional delegation announced the grants.
