The North Dakota Department of Corrections is looking for an inmate who walked away from custody while on an approved pass to visit the Jamestown YMCA.

Richard Hoekstra, program manager for the division of field services, said Charles Benjamin Goodsoldier, 22, was in level four of the Tompkins Community Treatment Program in Jamestown. Inmates on level four, the highest level of progress in the program, can be released on unsupervised passes into the community for one- or two-hour periods, Hoekstra said.

Goodsoldier and two other inmates went to the YMCA Sunday afternoon, but Goodsoldier did not return, Hoekstra said. He said the other two inmates did not know where Goodsoldier had gone.

"They had no information to help us," he said.

Goodsoldier was last seen wearing black sweatpants, a black sweatshirt, a black baseball cap and white tennis shoes.

According to a release from the North Dakota Department of Corrections, Goodsoldier is in the custody of the Department of Corrections for a conviction of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a Class Amisdemeanor. The conviction involved a stolen vehicle, not a sexual act, the release said. Goodsoldier has no history of sexual crimes and is not seen as a danger, the release said.

Hoekstra said Goodsoldier was sentenced to one year in the custody of the department of corrections and was scheduled to be released June 17.

If he is found, Goodsoldier likely will be returned to the prison system to serve the remainder of his sentence, Hoekstra said. He said the Stutsman County state's attorney's office has the authority to charge Goodsoldier with escape for walking away from custody.

The Tompkins Community Treatment Program houses 60 males and 33 females and has been successful in integrating inmates into the community since the program began in 1999, Hoekstra said.

He said this is the first time an inmate has walked away from custody.

Goodsoldier has gone "back and forth" between the Devils Lake area and the Poplar, Mont., area, and he also has ties to South Dakota, Hoekstra said.

Goodsoldier is 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 240 pounds, and has short black hair and brown eyes.

Goodsoldier has several tattoos, including "Goodsoldier" on the inside of his left forearm, three dots on the left side of his hand, dots on each knuckle, "Chuck" across the fingers on the top of his left hand, an American Indian woman's face on the upper left of his chest, and a medicine wheel on the right side of his neck. He also has a scar on the top of his left knee.

Anyone with information about Goodsoldier's whereabouts should contact local law enforcement authorities or call the North Dakota Department of Corrections Field Services at 701-527-0147.
