BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Jurors in the murder trial of Moe Gibbs asked Thursday for a DVD player to examine evidence submitted by a defense witness.
Thomas Edwards analyzed video images of Gibbs taken Sept. 15, 2006, at the Barnes County jail and a Valley City bank. The images were taken two days after Valley City State University student Mindy Morgenstern was found dead in her off-campus apartment.
During the trial, Edwards said he was unable to find any scratches on Gibbs in the video. Defense lawyers said it was evidence that Gibbs did not attack Morgenstern.
Thursday marked the second full day of jury deliberation in the Gibbs case. The jury of seven men and five women have deliberated a total of more than 12 hours.
"You've put in a long day. I appreciate that," Southeast District Judge John Paulson told the jurors shortly before he dismissed them for the day Wednesday.
It is the second murder trial for the 35-year-old Gibbs, a former Barnes County jailer. The first, held in Minot last summer, ended when jurors could not reach a verdict. They deliberated over four days before Paulson declared a mistrial.
Prosecutors decided to retry the case, and it was moved first to Grand Forks and then to Bismarck because of pretrial news coverage.
Morgenstern, 22, of New Salem, was strangled and stabbed in the neck. She and Gibbs lived in the same apartment building.
