Mandan folks will know the spot immediately. And even Bismarck folks, if they've been to Mandan for the Fourth of July parade or Art in the Park, will be able to find what has traditionally been called the Beanery in Dykshoorn Park on Mandan's West Main Street.

The Beanery, next to the Mandan Depot, home to Five Nations Arts, is becoming Mandan Heritage Plaza, housing the MandanProgress Organization, the Mandan Historical Society Museum and the Mandan Art Association Gallery.

An open house is planned for Mandan Heritage Plaza on Tuesday to show off the new occupants of the historical building at 411 West Main St.

The open house is from noon to 8 p.m. that day and will include tours, refreshments and a silent auction for items offered by the Art Association and the Progress Organization, said Rose Heiser, president of the Mandan Art Association. Auction items are currently on display and bids will be accepted through Sept. 5.

Del Wetsch and Tammy Helmers of the Mandan Progress Association will have an office in the building, Heiser said, and the Historical Society also will have a room. The Art Association will have two rooms, the hallway and conference room to use as a gallery and gift shop.

Currently, 23 artists' works are on display, Heiser said, a variety of oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, pencil drawings, photos, wood turnings, pottery, painted china, jewelry, prints and more, she said.

The gift area will offer items such as small matted photos and handpainted note cards, she said.

The Mandan Art Association has been in existence since 1958 and has never before had a gallery and a home, Heiser said.

"We worked on this for months to get a place," she said. The city of Mandan is leasing the building to the Progress Organization, with the other two entities subleasing from them, she said.

Items included in the silent auction will be pottery, paintings, a quilted lap robe and Mandan-themed articles such as sweatshirts, she said.

Regular gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information on the Art Association, visit www.mandanart.org.
