JAMESTOWN (AP) - Stutsman County Sheriff Dave Orr says his injuries were minor when a bullet discharged in the barrel of a rifle at a firing range on his property.
Orr said he had minor facial burns, shrapnel in his right arm and 300 fine, dust-like brass particles in his right eye. He said the particles have been removed and he won't lose his vision.
"Everything's fine," he said.
Orr said he had been looking forward to antelope hunting with some friends over the weekend but that will have to wait another year. His friends left Thursday without him.
He has owned his .25-06 Ruger for three years and never had any trouble with it earlier, he said.
The accident happened Sept. 30. Orr said he fired three rounds before the fourth round exploded in the barrel. He plans to have a gunsmith check out the gun before he uses it again.
"From now on, everybody on that range, myself included, when we qualify we'll have on safety glasses," he said. "If I would have had those, it would have been no problem."
