A Bismarck man was seriously injured in a collision with another vehicle at the intersection of Bismarck Expressway and East Main Avenue on Tuesday night.
Roy Roberts, 39, was taken by ambulance to Medcenter One with serious injuries following the crash shortly after 8 p.m., said Bismarck Police Lt. Dan Donlin.
Donlin said a 16-year-old girl driving a 2001 Oldsmobile was northbound on Expressway and Roberts, who was driving a 1995 Ford Explorer, was westbound on Main Avenue.
Witnesses said the 16-year-old girl ran a red light and struck the front of Roberts's vehicle, Donlin said. He said both vehicles ended up in the northwest corner of the intersection.
The 16-year-old girl was taken to St. Alexius for her injuries, as were Jessie Stewart, 17, of Bismarck, who was a passenger in her car and Tyler Roberts, 15, of Bismarck, who was a passenger in Roberts' car, Donlin said. He said all three were treated and released from the hospital.
Donlin said the three juveniles appear to have been wearing their seat belts, but Roberts was not wearing his. Roberts had to be removed from his vehicle using the jaws of life.
Donlin said state law calls for drivers involved in crashes involving serious injuries and deaths to have blood drawn for testing purposes. Blood was drawn from Roberts and the 16-year-old girl, but officers have no reason to believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, Donlin said.
"There was no indication that alcohol was present in either vehicle,"he said.
Though names of people, including juveniles, involved in traffic incidents are usually public record, police are not releasing the 16-year-old girl's name because of possible charges that could be filed against her, Donlin said.
Traffic charges could be filed in Bismarck Municipal Court, or criminal charges could be filed in South Central District Court or in juvenile court. Charges filed in juvenile court are not public record, and proceedings are confidential.
Donlin said no charges have been filed yet, and the case will be sent to the Bismarck city attorney and the Burleigh County state's attorney.
Both vehicles were severely damaged, he said.
