Bismarck police have arrested two suspects in a weekend carjacking and have linked them to a mid-September burglary.

Sgt. Dwight Offerman said a second suspect was arrested Monday evening in the Friday carjacking outside the Ramkota Hotel. The 18-year-old Bismarck man, Henry Long, has been charged with five felony counts. He is in the Burleigh County Detention Center, facing a $50,000 cash-only bond.

In his initial court appearance Tuesday, Long was told he was charged with accomplice to robbery - a Class A felony - along with four other charges stemming from the incidents.

Police also arrested a 17-year-old McLaughlin, S.D., boy Monday afternoon in connection with a Thursday robbery at Subway, 301 S. Third St., and for a Friday carjacking outside the Ramkota Hotel, 800 S. Third St.

Offerman said the two arrests came after police received "information from a multitude of sources" and were able to determine probable cause as to the identity of the suspects.

"We have recovered a firearm believed to have been used in both incidents," Offerman said.

He said the shotgun has been linked to a Sept. 17 burglary on the 400 block of Cambridge Drive. That burglary occurred between 9:30 and 11 a.m., and a neighbor saw two individuals carrying large duffel bags from the home. The bags were described as large enough to conceal firearms which were stolen in the burglary. More than $3,800 in property was stolen from the home.

Offerman said the boy, who is being held in the Youth Correction Center, has been issued nine juvenile citations for incidents occurring on three dates.

For the Sept. 17 burglary on Cambridge Drive, the boy was cited with burglary.

For the Sept. 27 Subway robbery, the boy was cited with armed robbery, terrorizing, felonious restraint and possession of an altered firearm. Offerman said he did not know what kind of alterations had been done to the gun, but cutting off the barrel of a long gun is a common alteration.

For the Sept. 28 carjacking at the Ramkota, the boy was cited with attempted robbery, discharge of a firearm in city limits, kidnapping and terrorizing.

In addition to the accomplice to robbery charge, Long has been charged with burglary, theft of property, conspiracy to commit robbery and felonious restraint.

Employees of Subway reported that a male in his late teens or early 20s entered the restaurant at 9:48 p.m. with a long-barreled gun and demanded employees give him money, a milkshake and a meatball sandwich. The clerk gave him an undisclosed amount of money, though police were not sure whether he was given the sandwich. Subway does not serve milkshakes.

Friday, two 21-year-old Bismarck women reported that two men wearing hooded sweatshirts approached them as they exited a vehicle parked near door number seven at Ramkota Hotel around 10 p.m. Both men wore bandannas over their faces, and one of them was carrying a long-barreled gun.

The men ordered the women to drive them to the area of South Washington Street and London Avenue. The women followed the orders, parking the car on London Avenue. The men ordered the women to get out of the car and run, which they did. The driver of the vehicle took the keys with her.

As the women ran from the car, they heard a gunshot coming from behind them, and Offerman said someone living in the neighborhood reported hearing something that sounded like a firework around the same time. The women called 911 from a residence in the area.

The suspects had fled the area before police arrived, but the vehicle was recovered in the neighborhood. Offerman said Tuesday that the 18-year-old man lives in the area of London Avenue.

Offerman said such incidents as the ones that occurred last week are rare in Bismarck.

"To have some form of closure on it is good," he said.
